Heron Lake

A snug, Kurumi-sized site with a view.

I’m surprised and pleased with the solitude here at Heron Lake State Park. Sure, the ranger did tell me that New Mexicans don’t like coming up here in the cold weather, and it has been at or slightly below freezing at night…and it can get windy and thunderstormy at times (got a few drops yesterday)…but, my gosh the days can be utterly gorgeous! It’s worth waking up to some frost and taking a chance on occasional high winds and rain. For me.

A Picture-Heavy Update

Aside from the insane Easter weekend, I had a peaceful and relaxing three weeks at Caballo Lake State Park (Riverside campground, below the dam). The hiking isn’t anything talk about and there tends to be cow pies everywhere when the river is low enough for the cattle to cross. But overall a nice place.

Easter Zoo

That's a single site with four RVs (a van camper is hidden behind the ones shown). Wooden signs throughout the park state clearly: "One RV Per Site". The rest of the park is similarly packed in.

I guess this falls under the “I’ll better appreciate the way things are normally after enduring this horror” way of looking at things. I knew it would be busy this Easter weekend at the state parks. I had no idea they’d go ape-sh*t insane. Live and learn.

2011 Taxes: It Pays to Procrastinate

I was waiting until the last minute, as usual, before doing my taxes. Why do it early if you know you’re gonna owe? But I just happened to check the Android Appstore at Amazon.com on April 1st and caught a bargain: TurboTax for Android, Kindle Fire Edition, free to download (no surprise there) and also free federal and state filing if the tax return was started between March 30 and April 1. Nice! I just made it in time (you only had to fill in personal info to “start” it, then I had until the usual April 15 or so to actually finish).
